Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Stars Panic by Lauren Oliver is definitely an interesting book. It follows the life of Heather, a recent high school graduate who puts her life on the line by participating in the secret, illegal, and potentially deadly game of Panic. The prize for winning? $67,000 and a chance to leave the tiny, hopeless town of Carp, New York. The story switches points of view, alternating between Heather and Dodge, who plays Panic with the hopes of getting better treatment for his crippled sister and maybe even a little bit of revenge. Panic hits the ground running in the first sentence, and the action only gets more intense with each page. It's a high-energy book that's easy to read and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It's exciting, suspenseful, and very gripping. However, it's also riddled with plot holes. Once the adrenaline wears off, readers will start to notice that several things in the book don't add up. In addition, the conclusion is rushed and unrealistic, and doesn't really fit with the tone of the novel. That being said, Panic is still incredibly energetic and worth reading for the action alone, especially if readers are looking for a quick and entertaining book that doesn't require too much thought to enjoy. |
