Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars The Impossible Knife of Memory was one of the selections for my school's book club this month. It probably isn't something that I would have chosen otherwise, but I'm very glad I read it. Its serious subject matter and introverted protagonist may take a few chapters to warm up to, but its humor and resolution make it worth it. The Impossible Knife of Memory is about the struggles of Hayley, a teenage girl who returns to school for her senior year after spending the last several years traveling the country with her father, Andy. Andy is a war veteran who struggles with PTSD, substance abuse, and wildly unpredictable mood swings. Hayley often has to take charge and be responsible for both Andy and herself, even while she struggles to find her footing in a new life and deal with her own past demons. This is a dark story about the horrors of war and abandonment, as well as the crushing hopelessness that comes with mental illness. However, it's also a hopeful story about love, recovery, and strength. The Impossible Knife of Memory is painfully realistic and will tear a hole in the hearts of readers before stitching it back up again one page at a time.
